About America's Top Choirs
America’s Top Choirs™ is a competition hosted by FeelitLIVE, which showcases the vast array of choral talent from across the United States.
America’s Top Choirs™ was created to shine a spotlight on the high school choirs that make great music for our country every day. These choirs have the privilege of being judged by a jury of five distinguished choral experts, who handpick finalists and pick the grand prize winner with the audience's help.

The Judges
Dr. Charlene Archibeque
Dr. Charlene Archibeque, one of America’s foremost choral conductors and teachers, was the first woman to earn the DMA in Choral Conducting, in 1969 from the University of Colorado. Her distinguished career spanning six decades is replete with International and domestic recognitions and accolades. Her 35 years as Director of Choral Activities at San Jose State University, not only included training hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students, but also helped put SJSU on the world map by winning seven international choral competitions with the famous SJSU Choraliers, completing sixteen concert tours to Australia, Mexico and throughout Europe and conducting in many major music halls. She won prizes for Best Conductor at Spittal, Gorizia and Tallinn International Festivals.
She was the recipient of the Howard Swan Award presented by California ACDA in 2008 and in 2013 the “Excellence in Choral Music,” presented by the University of Colorado and has recently been made an Honorary Life Member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. She has been named Distinguished Alumna in May 2020 from the College of Music at the University of Colorado. The recipient of both San Jose State’s highest honors: Outstanding Professor and President’s Scholar, she currently serves on the Board of the American Beethoven Society, is a Past-President of the Silicon Valley League of the San Francisco Symphony and is Editor of the Charlene Archibeque Choral Series with Santa Barbara Music Publishers. Her DVD “How to Make a Good Choir Sound Great” is available from GIA.
Dr. Jeffrey Benson
Dr. Jeffrey Benson is currently Director of Choral Activities at San José State University in San José, California. The Washington Post hails his choirs for singing “with an exquisite blend, subtlety of phrasing, confident musicianship and fully supported tone…that would be the envy of some professional ensembles”. Dr. Benson made his international conducting debut with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the SJSU Choraliers in Limerick, Ireland, and made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2015. Choirs under his direction have performed with the Rolling Stones, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, and Sarah Brightman. He is a published composer and arranger with Colla Voce and Santa Barbara Music Publishing.
Dr. Benson is a published composer and arranger with Colla Voce Music and Santa Barbara Music Publishing, under the Charlene Archibeque Choral Series. He is also the Artistic Director of Peninsula Cantare, a community chorus based in Palo Alto. Previously, Dr. Benson served as Director of Choral Activities and Fine Arts Department Chair at H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Benson is an active member of the National Association for Music Education, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), and the National Collegiate Choral Organization, where he currently serves as California National Board Representative. ACDA recognized Benson with the first annual Colleen Kirk Award for his outstanding achievement as a young conductor.
Dr. Edith Copley
Dr. Edith Copley is a Regents’ Professor and Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University, where she conducts the highly acclaimed Shrine of the Ages Choir. She additionally conducts the Master Chorale of Flagstaff that performs major choral/orchestral works each spring with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra (FSO). She has conducted more than 30 all-state choirs, and the ACDA and NAfME National Mixed Honor Choirs. She has also conducted international choral festivals in Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Luxembourg, Tasmania, England, Australia, China, Oman, and Turkey.
Dr. Copley has received the NAU School of Music Centennial Teacher of the Year Award, Arizona Music Educator of the Year, Arizona ACDA Outstanding Choral Director Award, and others. She is an active member of NAfME, Chorus America, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization and has served the ACDA in various capacities over the last 20 years, including President of the Western Division and Arizona State President. After retirement from NAU, she will be starting her journey as the National ACDA President. She has received numerous honors, including NAU School of Performing Arts Centennial Teacher of the Year Award in 1999, Arizona Music Educator of the Year in 2004 and the Arizona ACDA Outstanding Choral Director Award in 2007.
Dr. Derrick Fox
Dr. Derrick Fox is the Director of Choral Activities and Distinguished Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He earned a BME from Arkansas State University, a MM in Choral Conducting from the University of Missouri – Columbia and a DMA in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, where he was awarded the prestigious University Enrichment Graduate Fellowship.
Dr. Fox has conducted all-state choirs, honor choirs and led professional development workshops across the United States and internationally. His professional workshops focus on assessment in the choral classroom, building classroom community, rehearsal strategies, choral conducting techniques and shape note singing in the African American community. Dr. Fox’s recent engagements included and teaching residencies at the Latvian Academy of Music and Syracuse University, performance tours through Lithuania and Estonia as well as conducting the 2018 Texas All-State MS/JH Honor Choir and the SWACDA 7–10 Men’s Honor Choir. Highlights from his upcoming engagements include presentations at Nebraska ACDA, Kansas ACDA, Kentucky ACDA, South Carolina MEA and North Dakota MEA as well as conducting the Hawaii All-State Festival Choir, Alabama All-State Choir, New York All-State MS/JH Choir, and the National ACDA Middle School/Junior High Mixed Honor Choir.
Dr. Jeffery Redding
Jeffery Redding, the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award Recipient, is the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Dr. Redding has led his choirs in performances at national, regional, and state conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). His choirs have earned first place awards at Heritage Festivals of Gold in California, Chicago, New York and at the Festival of Spirituals in Washington D.C. While participating in the International Music Festival in Verona, Italy, his chorus from West Orange High School received the Gold Award for best choir, with Dr. Redding honored as top director.
He has conducted the ACDA National High School Honor Choir, the Central Division ACDA Honor Choir, and the North Central Division ACDA Honor Choir, the Eastern Division ACDA Honor Choir and All-State and Honor choirs in approximately forty states. Dr. Redding has been featured as guest conductor at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center, and Orchestra Hall on numerous occasions, and around the world in Muscat, Oman, Limerick, Ireland, and at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, among others. He is also one of the conductors for Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Processional at Epcot.

America's Top Choirs™ Rules
Canada's Top Choirs™ is an online submission-competition focused on choirs across the United States. The first season of America's Top Choirs™ focuses on high school choirs, so the competition will receive submissions from high schools across the United States.

Submission requirements
- Song entry: Submit one song per high school choir, recorded during the last academic year.
- Song length: Less than 5 minutes.
- Entry format: Upload high-resolution mp4 video file to drive link provided by FeelitLIVE upon confirmation of school's participation.
- Music type: Can be any form of music – original or adapted, and of any genre.
- Live participation: The choir director will need to make her/himself/themselves available to do a video interaction with the jury on the competition date. This interaction will be live-streamed on FeelitLIVE.
- Other: Provide the sheet music along with any writeup, if applicable, for the song submitted.
- Entry fee: There is no entry fee to be paid. Choirs just need to fill in the online form.
Evaluation
- A jury of five leading choral experts will evaluate each entry.
- The decision of the jury is final and cannot be contested.
- Each performance will be evaluated according to the following:
- Technical evaluation – 10 points
- Intonation
- Tone
- Rhythm
- Dynamics
- Integration of different voice parts
- The overall sound quality of the choir
- Music and artistic criteria – 10 points
- Interpretation
- Style
- Overall artistic impression – 10 points
- Song selection
- Song integrity
- Presentation
- Audience poll – 10 points
The audience will be live polling during the performance, and this will be factored into the overall team tally
- Technical evaluation – 10 points

Winner
The high school entry with the highest score will be named America's Top Choirs™ 2021 High School Edition winner and will receive:
- $2,500 cash prize
- Opportunity to host its own virtual or hybrid event on FeelitLIVE
Category winners
The categories below will be awarded a $500 cash prize each.
- Best creative visuals
- Best choreography
- Outstanding live performance
- Best soloist
- Best audio/video engineering
Top 10 Finalists
The top 10 secondary schools entries selected by the judges will be entitled to:
- Broadcast their entry at the ATC 2021 High School Edition Grand Finale
- Opportunity to set up its own virtual fundraiser event
