Judges' spotlight of Britain's Top Choirs™ - Dr. Manvinder Rattan, CEO at The Voices Foundation and a former judge of The Choir by BBC Two.


This article spotlights the next judge on our inaugural edition of Britain’s Top Choirs™, Dr. Manvinder Rattan. Read along to know more about his career and achievements in the field of choral music.

Manvinder Rattan is a Choral and Orchestral conductor and trainer of conductors.

Manvinder is the CEO of The Voices Foundation, a national music charity working to help schools, academies, Music Education Hubs, and other partners from across the UK to establish effective music education since 1993.

Manvinder is also Head of Conductor Training for Sing for Pleasure where the team of tutors teaches around 300 conductors most years, with 100% of respondents rating the training as good to excellent.

Manvinder is Musical Director of Hertford Choral Society and Hertford Chamber Choir prior to which he served as Musical Director of the John Lewis Partnership Music Society. Having inherited one choir, the society now has over eighteen choirs, an orchestra, and a jazz band.  

Freelance engagements also keep Dr. Rattan busy - guest conducting and teaching both here and abroad - and occasional performances as a soloist, specialising in singing the Adhaan from Karl Jenkins' popular work, The Armed Man, and a regular workshop leader for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. 

In 2012, Manvinder  was invited to join Gareth Malone as he filmed his next series of 'The Choir.' This time working on singing in the workplace. Manvinder was a judge in the series, which was broadcasted in September 2012 on BBC2.

In 2014 he formed his own professional chamber choir, Serafine, and chamber orchestra, Serafine Sinfonia, with whom he recorded Oliver Tarney's Magnificat, to critical acclaim. 2014 also saw Manvinder’s Royal Albert Hall conducting debut, and in 2016, his Royal Festival Hall and Indian conducting debuts.

In 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by his Alma Mater, York St John University, in recognition of his achievements in the fields of music and conducting, and in 2021, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music in Choral Directing.

How to participate?

Choirs from across the U.K. are invited to upload a song performance recorded and performed after 1st September 2021. There is a £50 entry fee to be paid by credit/debit card for each entry when filling in the online form.

The last date for submissions is Friday, 10th February 2023, till 11.59 pm GMT.
