About Canada's Top Choirs
Canada's Top Choirs™ wants to shine a spotlight on secondary school choirs that generate beautiful music in Canada every day and get together to celebrate teamwork, resilience, talent, diversity, hope, and positivity.
Secondary school choirs from across Canada are invited to upload a song performance recorded and performed during the 2021 academic year to enter Canada's Top Choirs competition before Friday, April 29, 2022.

The Judges
Robert Filion
Chef de chœur, Choral Conductor
Robert Filion is recognized for the quality of his choirs and his involvement in choral education. He led the choirs at the Centre d’excellence artistique de l’Ontario for 30 years earning top awards in local, national, and international competitions. He is Artistic Director of the Unisong, the annual Canada Day festival of Canadian choirs at the National Arts Centre. Robert champions Canadian composers through commissioning and performing as well as expanding the French-Canadian repertoire. Since 2018, Mr. Filion is the Choir Conductor for the University of Ottawa Choir. In 2013 Mr. Filion received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Dr. Jamie Hillman
Dr. Jamie Hillman is a Canadian and American musician, active as a conductor, singer, pianist, music educator, and composer. He holds the endowed Elmer Iseler Chair in Conducting at the University of Toronto where he is also Director of Choral Studies and an Associate Professor. He conducts the U of T MacMillan Singers and leads the master's and doctoral degree programs in Choral Conducting. He is a frequent guest conductor of All-State and honour choirs and is the curator and editor of the Jamie Hillman Choral Series published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing. Dr. Jakub Martinec
Dr. Jakub Martinec is director of choral activities at Memorial University of Newfoundland, he is also the founding artistic director of the Atlantic Boychoir, the first Provincial choir in Canada, and the National Boychoir of Canada. Born in the Czech Republic, Dr. Martinec has performed with eminent orchestras, ensembles and musical personalities in some of the world’s most famous concert halls and cathedrals. In September 2020, Dr. Martinec received the prestigious RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant award for his contributions to choral singing in Canada through his research. He is often asked to be a guest clinician, adjudicator and presenter.
Dr. Melissa Morgan
Dr. Melissa Morgan is the Assistant Professor of Choral Music in the department of Media, Arts, and Performance at the University of Regina. As a researcher and scholar, Dr. Morgan has contributed articles to Teaching Music through Performance in Choir, Vol. 5. She is also published in the Canadian Music Educators Journal, and the American Choral Directors Association monthly publication, Choral Journal. An active conductor, she is frequently asked to serve as a guest clinician, adjudicator, and conductor with high school, children’s choirs, and church choirs throughout Canada. Carrie Tennant
Carrie Tennant is the founder and artistic director of the Vancouver Youth Choir. For the past 15 years, she has worked primarily with youth, developing leadership and artistry with young singers. Carrie’s choirs have been featured at Chorus America, Podium (Choral Canada), and National ACDA conferences, and have twice been awarded first place in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. During her time with Coastal Sound Youth Choir, their popular Indiekör shows were recognized with Choral Canada’s National Award for Innovation. Carrie is the editor and curator for two choral series; the Vancouver Youth Choir Choral Series (Cypress Publishing), and the brand-new Carrie Tennant Choral Series (Hal Leonard). Canada's Top Choirs Rules
Canada's Top Choirs is an online submission-competition focused on choirs across Canada. The first season of Canada's Top Choirs will focus on secondary school choirs, so the competition will receive submissions from secondary schools across Canada.

Submission requirements
- Song entry: Submit one song per secondary school choir, recorded between August 1, 2020 - April 29, 2022.
- Song length: Less than 5 minutes.
- Entry format: Upload high-resolution mp4 video file to drive link provided by FeelitLIVE upon confirmation of school's participation.
- Music type: Can be any form of music – original or adapted, and of any genre.
- Live participation: The choir director will need to make her/himself/themselves available to do a video interaction with the jury on the competition date – Sunday, May 15, 2022. This interaction will be live-streamed on FeelitLIVE.
- Other: Provide the sheet music along with any writeup, if applicable, for the song submitted.
- Entry fee: There is a C$40 entry fee to be paid by credit/debit card for each entry when filling in the online form.

Evaluation
- A jury of five leading choral experts will evaluate each entry.
- The decision of the jury is final and cannot be contested.
- Each performance will be evaluated according to the following:
- Technical evaluation – 10 points
- Intonation
- Tone
- Rhythm
- Dynamics
- Integration of different voice parts
- The overall sound quality of the choir
- Music and artistic criteria – 10 points
- Interpretation
- Style
- Overall artistic impression – 10 points
- Song selection
- Song integrity
- Presentation
- Audience poll – 10 points
The audience will be live polling during the performance, and this will be factored into the overall team tally
- Technical evaluation – 10 points
Prizes
Winner
The secondary school entry with the highest score will be named Canada's Top Choirs 2022 Secondary School Edition winner and will receive:
- C$2,500 cash prize
- Opportunity to host its own virtual or hybrid event on FeelitLIVE
Category winners
The categories below will be awarded a C$500 cash prize each.
- Best creative visuals
- Best choreography
- Outstanding live performance
- Best soloist
- Best audio/video engineering
Top 10 Finalists
The top 10 secondary schools entries selected by the judges will be entitled to:
- Broadcast their entry at the CTC 2022 Secondary School Edition Grand Finale
- Showcase event on Sunday, May 15, 2022
- Opportunity to set up its own virtual fundraiser event
